Girls golf: Broomfield’s Dorans wins 3rd regional crown in 4 years

FORT MORGAN — You want consistency? Meet Taylor Dorans.

The Broomfield High senior rolled to her third regional golf title in four years on Tuesday, firing a 2-over-par 76 at Quail Dunes Golf Course for medalist honors at the Class 4A Northern Region tournament.

The crown follows the titles she won as both a freshman and a junior. And that sophomore year? A measly second place.

“She’s just been so consistent from freshman year to now,” Broomfield coach John Ferraro said in a phone interview. “She’s been such a good player. But for me, even more important than that, she’s just a great kid.

“She’s such a role model for the freshmen this year. It’s going to help them get better.”

Mountain View’s Kelsey Greiner finished second, four strokes behind Dorans.

The Eagles placed fourth as a team, qualifying Dorans and Carson Platnick, who shot a 94, for state. Hope Kim, meanwhile, shot 103 and Skylar George 105 to round out the BHS day.

True to form, Dorans — a University of Wyoming recruit — was steady, logging two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys on the hilly Quail Dunes layout. The only thing that plagued her a bit was her short game, which she’ll work on cleaning up for the May 20-21 state tournament at Broken Tee Golf Course in Englewood.

Dorans’ highest finish ever at state came last year when she placed fourth.

“A state championship is definitely my main goal,” Dorans said. “But I can’t control what the other girls do. So I’m just going to go out and embrace it. It’s my last year. … If I have some good, decent rounds, I’ll be happy with that.”

Centaurus’ Mikayla Whiteaker shot a 109 to lead the Warriors. None of the other CHS players logged official scores.
