LONGMONT — Silver Creek freshman swimmer Sam Willett qualified for state in every event but one this season. He wanted them all but for a freshman, 11 out of 12 is still pretty darn good.

The 50 freestyle remains the only state cut that has eluded Willett. In a dual-style triangular with Broomfield and Longmont on Tuesday, Willett swam under the state cut for the 100 freestyle (53.50) while leading off the 400 freestyle relay team, which took first place.

The Raptors freshman likely will not swim the 50 freestyle at conference or state because of the way the Raptors have their lineup set. But just coming that close gave Willett his season highlight before even getting a crack at state.

“That was my goal coming into the season and unfortunately we missed a couple meets due to weather and we had to combine a couple meets,” Willett said. “That was a setback but just making all except for one has been an extreme accomplishment for me and I’m happy. It gets me excited for conference, state, everything.”

Willett also won the 100 backstroke (59:14) and swam a personal-best time (2:08.32) in the 200 IM, finishing second to Raptors sophomore Tyler Lis.

The Raptors big guns — Cody Hoyes and Chase and Tyler Lis — combined for six first-place finishes. Raptors freshman Blake Sterns missed the state cut (5:33.00) in the 500 freestyle by .08 seconds and hopes to get under the state mark at the conference meet.

“This meet was a great way to send us into conference and into state,” Willett said. “I know everybody was swimming what they’re planning on swimming at conference and state today and it was a good look at where we are and what we need to focus on going into taper.”

In the head-to-head team scoring, the Raptors beat the Trojans 210-95 and beat the Eagles 183-122. The Eagles beat the Trojans 187-112.

The Raptors will compete with Broomfield and Thompson Valley for the Northern Conference crown next weekend. Some of Broomfield’s top swimmers were out for Tuesday’s meet after the Eagles beat Thompson Valley at their home finale last week. Silver Creek coach Debbie Stewart said a regular-season win over the Eagles sets up a good three-way race for the conference team title.

“Nobody in our conference has gone undefeated,” Stewart said. “We lost to Thompson Valley, they lost to us and Thompson Valley lost to us, so it’s going to be a pretty good conference meet.”

Trojans senior Sean Weston, who has already qualified for state in six events, took on a new challenge in his final regular-season home meet. He swam the 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay back-to-back-to-back.

“It was pretty tiring,” Weston said. “I was just trying to get threw them. I was trying to get to state in the 100 because I was really close and I wanted to swim the 500 because I just wanted to swim that one more time. Turns out they were right after one another.”

Trojans head coach Jill LeGault said many Trojans who are headed to state improved their times for seeding. She added that diver Nick Vaughn (184.30) turned in another good state-qualifying score and Will Cotter continued to drop his times slowly.

In a change of pace, LeGault did a little swimming of her own after the Trojans seniors tossed her and her assistants into the pool in celebration of their home senior meet.

“The boys did well,” LeGault said, still draining her hair after climbing out of the deep end. “We’re not going into taper until next week so the times are staying right at their best, which is right where we need them to be. It was a great end to the season and we’re looking forward to conference and state.”

The Northern Conference swim meet is May 10-11 at Mountain View High School. The Class 4A State Championship will be held May 17-18 at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton.
