Boys swimming: Broomfield wins five events in triangular despite wacky lineup

LONGMONT — After going all-out to beat Northern Conference rival Thompson Valley at their home senior meet last week, the Broomfield boys swimmers approached Tuesday’s regular-season finale as a rewarding, fun meet for the seniors.

In a triangular with Silver Creek and Longmont, Eagles head coach Emily Austin let her seniors pick their events.

Eagles senior Kevin Rhinesmith, for example, swam the 50 and 500 freestyle races, which are unique races for him. He normally races the 100 and 200 freestyle and is a state alternate in all three relays. Rhinesmith wasn’t the only senior who opted for a unique experience in the regular-season finale.

“We had a lot of unique kinds of things that happened today,” Rhinesmith said. “We had two seniors who got their state quals today, so that was really fun. They’re really big parts of the team and we have a lot of fun with them so it’s really good getting them on the state team and making sure we have one more week with them.”

Matt Schmidt (200 freestyle relay) and Tim McGinnis (200 medley relay) swam state-qualifying times along with two relays.

“I let my seniors pick what events they wanted to swim and some of them picked very, very off events,” Austin said. “That’s an understatement. We put in a tough lineup, a less fun lineup, at our senior meet on Friday because we wanted to beat Thompson Valley.”

Two of the Eagles’ top scorers — Daniel Brindzik and Blake Logan — were out for Tuesday’s meet. With the pressure of beating rival Silver Creek off their shoulders, the Eagles senior who were there made full use of Austin’s open invitation.

The 400 freestyle relay seniors — Cody Engstrom, Scott Cave, Jacob Bellendir and McGinnis — each swam a 100 IM instead. They finished seventh in 4:32.64.

Horseplay aside, the Eagles took first place in five events, including the 200 freestyle relay.

Senior Martin Wallace (47.95) won the 100 freestyle. Senior Cody Engstrom (301.90) won the one-meter dive. Junior Andrew Hahn (24.23) won the 50 freestyle. Junior Alex Prins (2:02.03) won the 200 freestyle.

In the head-to-head team scoring, the Raptors beat the Trojans 210-95 and beat the Eagles 183-122. The Eagles beat the Trojans 187-112.

The Eagles will compete with Silver Creek and Thompson Valley for the Northern Conference crown next weekend. Having none of the three go undefeated during the regular season sets up a good three-way race for the conference team title.
