Boys swimming: Broomfield blows past partial Thompson Valley squad

BROOMFIELD — In the big scheme of things, swim duals typically do not elicit high emotions from teams. But with one of the Broomfield’s top Northern League foes hitting the water Friday, its swimmers had their juices flowing.

It showed in the final score, with the Eagles routing Thompson Valley 110-75 in the team’s final competition of the season at the Broomfield Community Center pool.

“They’re one of our big rivals and this is really one of the first times we’ve gotten to see them,” said Broomfield’s Daniel Gerbrandt, who won the 100 breaststroke. “Other than today, I think that they were in an invite that we were at this year.”

While Broomfield got a glimpse of some its top competition for the May 10-11 league championships and the Class 4A state meet May 17-18, it was hard to say how much the look actually yielded. Thompson Valley had only around 10 swimmers at the dual, garnering the Eagles little overall intelligence on their competition.

“Really, I don’t know what they were trying to do today,” Gerbrandt said. “They have a team about the size of ours, so I don’t think this was really a good representation.”

The Eagles had actually anticipated more of a brawl and set up its races accordingly. The team did not stack its events, but had its swimmers competing in their stronger events. With that sort of firepower in the water Broomfield won nine of the day’s 12 races. But Emily Austin is far from taking Thompson Valley lightly, even with the victory.

“They are always a team that brings it at conference and state,” the Broomfield coach said.

Given the stretch of the season, the dual did not produce many record-breaking times. University of Missouri recruit Martin Wallace set a new school mark in the 50 freestyle with a 21.95. This was no easy task given the Eagles had just begun their pre-taper this week, meaning extra laps and work in anticipation of peaking its swimmers for the 4A championship. The dual also came just before the team heads to the VMAC for Saturday’s Mustang Invitational.

While challenging, the Eagles did not anticipate the quick turnaround throwing a crimp in their style.

“It’s tough, but we’re use to it with the big meets we swim,” Gerbrandt said. “It’s just like swimming preliminary the night before finals.”

The one member of Broomfield the back-to-back meets affected most was defending 4A state dive champion Cody Engstrom. Diving was moved to the front of the dual, since the Mustang Invitational was holding its diving Friday evening. But having a little more than an hour in between the Brigham Young University recruit’s competitions did little to throw him off kilter.

Engstrom ran away with the win at his home pool, executing his most advanced list to date.

“I threw everything here that I’ll throw at the Mustang,” he said. “I was a little rushed, but it felt pretty good.”

Note the story has been modified to include Martin Wallace setting a school record in 50 freestyle.
