Track & field: Legacy’s Drotar leads Lightning at Holy Family Pre-Prom Invite

BROOMFIELD — At the start of the track season, Matthew Drotar had little experience with the 400-meter dash. But now midway through Legacy’s schedule, the sprinter has proven he is a quick study.

Drotar was in top form Wednesday at the Holy Family’s Pre-Prom Invitational, dusting the race’s championship heat at the St. Jude Track and Field Complex. But it was not what the sprinter was able to accomplish against the other runners that had him so pumped up about his performance.

Instead, Drotar was more impressed with what he was able to accomplish against the competitor who matters most — the clock.

“It’s a personal record for me,” said Drotar, who finished with a time of 50.07 seconds in the race. “I’m happy with where I’m at right now. But I’m pushing to drop below 50 before state.”

The win was the first of two Drotar earned at the meet and one of his team’s six titles of the day, giving the Lightning a commanding lead heading into Thursday’s field events. The meet was split into two days, given the soggy conditions of the throwing pit.

The finish was just what the Lightning sprinter was searching for at this point in the season and after bad weather had held him from competing. But he also understands he has picked the low-hanging fruit of the race and the real work of improving his times has just begun.

“I’m getting there and every week I push myself,” said Drotar, who also won the 200-meter dash. “But now it’s becoming a matter of tightening the little things in the race and that is much more of a challenge.”

On the girls side of the meet, Legacy and Holy Family’s accomplished distance runners dominated the finishes of nearly every event.

The two the teams had the most dominating performances in the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter relay. Legacy senior and University of Colorado cross country recruit Melanie Nun took the mile in dominant fashion, winning with a time of 5:17. And she was followed up by Katie and Lindsey Chavez, with the Holy Family sisters finishing second and third respectively. Then the teams dueled it out in the relay with Legacy edging the Tigers by 11 seconds.

“This was the first time we’ve run this event this season, so it really is a baseline for us,” Legacy Emma Gee said. “The next couple meets we’ll be really working to bring our times together.”

Despite the 3,200 relay being one of Holy Family’s strongest, the team did not lament pulling into second place.

“We were very pleased, because we PRed by 30 seconds for the season,” said Lindsey Chavez, who also won the 3,200-meter run. “And we were missing one of our runners today.

Chavez believes it is only a matter of time before the relay and she and her sister’s times in other events see even bigger dips. The sisters missed a better part of the start of the season, busy helping Tigers girls basketball win the Class 3A state title.

“It’s like our coach has said, we’re getting raced back into shape,” Lindsey Chavez said.
