Boys swimming: Broomfield’s Wallace breaks pair of Boulder County Invite records

BOULDER — Martin Wallace was not in tip-top form Saturday when he hit the water at the South Boulder Recreation Center.

The Broomfield senior entered the Boulder County Invitational running on fumes after churning out one of his hardest weeks of practice to date. But any lingering affects from his workout routine were far from noticeable in his final hurrah at the county championship.

Truth be told, Wallace was untouchable in the pool, racing his way to two titles, both in meet record times.

“I didn’t really know where I’d be,” he said. “I just came in here looking to get some good times and get some racing in.”

Wallace broke meet records for the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyles behind season-best performances. He started the day recording a time of 1 minute, 41.85 seconds in the freestyle and finished his individual competition with a 51.62 in the butterfly. And while he was pleased with each performance it was his swim in the longer race that was the more substantial of the two.

The senior’s time surpassed a mark set 11-years ago in the freestyle by Longmont’s J.D. White, beating the invitational’s third-longest standing record by nearly a full second.

“I love BoCo, so this is great,” he said. “I’m happy to leave a mark, hopefully someone next year can break it — I’ll be watching.”

Wallace — who earned co-High Points Swimmer at the meet — finished second at the 2012 Class 4A state meet in each of the events he took top places in Saturday. And while he is confident in the direction he is moving in both the races he has far from etched the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly in stone for state this time around.

“As it get closer to the conference meet we’ll put a lineup together and figure out where I fit in state,” he said. “But the 200 free and 100 fly is definitely a possibility.”

Broomfield had seven championship-heat finishes on the afternoon to finish fourth overall in the six-team field. And Wallace was not alone atop the podium when everything was said and done.

Cody Engstrom continued to make headway on his 4A title defense in diving. The Brigham Young University recruit dusted the invitational’s field with 512.75 points — 114-points better than his next closest competition.

“It felt pretty good,” Engstrom said. “I had some solid scores and I hit some of my big dives, so I was pretty happy.”

Engstrom is ahead of the curve of most of his 4A competition, but he is far from resting on his present work. With state less than a month away, he is certain he can make more strides before he puts a bow on his high school career.

“There’s some pressure,” he said. “Everyone’s kind of like, here’s this kid who came back from Germany and won it last year, so I have to live up to that.”
