Track & field: Forrest Wetterstrom sets Longmont Invite triple jump record

Longmont’s Marcus Johnson puts the shot at the Longmont Invitational on Saturday. Johnson placed third in the event with a toss of 46-6.5

LONGMONT — He’s not strutting on the catwalk throwing out Blue Steel, but Longmont’s Forrest Wetterstrom knows how to get down a runway.

At the Longmont Invitational on Saturday, Wetterstrom tried out a new runway technique and it paid off. The Trojans senior won the triple jump and set a new meet record of 45 feet, 5 inches.

“It feels really good to get into the 45s because we haven’t had a 45 jumper since Tevan McIntire,” Wetterstrom said. “It also puts me an inch away from Karber in first place (in the state). He’s a great athlete so that should be a good contest at state.”

Until Saturday, Wetterstrom, who took sixth at state last season, said he had been jumping conservatively and trying not to scratch. But Saturday he focused on building speed gradually and hitting his jump at top speed and getting his hips through the whole jump.

Wetterstrom’s best distance coming in was 44 feet. Using his new technique, he consistently jumped over 44 feet and improved steadily with each jump. On his final attempt, the Trojans senior hit 45-5, which puts him 11/4 inch behind Cheyenne Mountain’s Karber for 4A’s top mark this season. Wetterstrom’s finish also helped lead the Trojans boys to a sixth-place team finish on their home track at Everly-Montgomery Field.

Now that he feels he’s reaching his potential, Wetterstrom said he hopes to reach the Longmont High school record of 45-113/4.

Setting a meet record of his own, Lyons’ Ryan Boucher won the 400-meter dash in 49.62 seconds to help the Class 2A Lions take fourth place. The Lions senior had a personal score to settle after taking second at the Broomfield Shootout the previous weekend. It was the first time he hadn’t won the event since the start of his junior year.

“I was a little mad, honestly,” Boucher said. “But I had to move on. There are a lot of things to take for granted. But I’m happy with my times compared to where I was this time last season.”

Leading the Niwot girls to sixth place, the Cougars’ young 400-meter runners took the top three spots in the championship heat. Sophomore Rachel Sharpe won the race in 61.42 seconds, edging freshman Niki Marshall by .01 seconds. Cougars freshman Kela Fetters took third with a time of 62.30.

“It was really nice to be running with a teammate and be able to push each other,” Sharpe said. “We were pretty close for the whole race and I just beat her at the end. We’re pretty close at practice and I knew coming out of the curve I had to push through.”

Also for the Cougars, senior Lorne Jenkins jumped 20-111/2 to win the long jump, and he also won the 110 hurdles in 15.18 seconds.

For Silver Creek, Austin Metzner won the pole vault with a vault of 12-04 and Emilie Rembert won the girls long jump with a jump of 15-10.

“I was hoping to get get a PR today but it didn’t look like it was going to happen this weekend,” Metzner said. “By the time the season is over, I’m hoping to break into a 14-foot jump. The pole vault has been going pretty good this year. I feel like I’m definitely building up toward state and that I can compete with the other top contenders in the state.”

Mead sprinter Alex Mead broke his own meet record in the 200-meter dash, taking first in 21.54 seconds. But the time was unofficial because it was deemed wind-aided.
