Baseball: Faith Christian sweeps Peak to Peak in No. 2 vs. 3 battle

ARVADA — The Peak to Peak baseball team is rounding itself into a state contender and achieving numerous firsts as a program. But one thorn remains in the Pumas’ side.

An eight-year string of futility against Faith Christian reached nine Saturday, as the No. 2 Eagles swept No. 3 Peak to Peak 11-1 and 5-1 in a Class 3A Metro League doubleheader.

The Eagles (5-1, 5-0) are the only team in the league the Pumas have never beaten.

“This was the year that I thought our kids had no reason to come out and play scared, but they still came out and played scared today,” seventh-year Peak to Peak coach Tim Combs said. “I saw it yesterday at practice, so I had some concerns.”

Although the Pumas (6-3, 3-2) are off to the best start in program annals, Game 1 looked like old times against the perennially contending Eagles. Behind all-state left-hander Tyler Tucker’s pitching, Faith Christian cruised and implemented the 10-run rule after five innings.

Tucker allowed two hits — one a solo homer to Isaac Friesen — and the host Eagles’ lineup got to Peak to Peak starter Brian Goedde for nine runs before chasing him in the third inning.

“Then, in the second game, I can’t believe we only scored one,” Combs said. “That’s part of us playing scared. We weren’t loose. We weren’t having fun.”

The Pumas had a legitimate shot in Game 2, as ace Friesen toed the mound. But the Pumas stranded the bases loaded after taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning and left them full again in the fifth, when they were trying to carve into a 3-1 deficit.

In Friesen’s final inning, the fourth, the Pumas made an error on a potential double-play ball, which paved the way for a three-run inning.

“If we would have been more clutch in those situations, I think it would have put us in the game and kept our heads up,” said Goedde, who went 2 for 3 with a double and the Pumas’ lone run in Game 2. “I think we’ll be all right. This was a good ball club and it makes no sense to keep our heads down after losing to them.”

Friesen (3-1) absorbed his first loss of the season despite striking out six and allowing only one earned run. The Pumas’ game against Kent Denver was moved from Tuesday to Wednesday earlier this week due to weather, and Friesen, who pitched three innings in that one, said his endurance was down a bit after not having the extra day of rest.

“I think we’ll bounce back,” Friesen said. “We held close with these guys in the second game, but I still think we can do better than this. It was just the little things, the small things.”
