Track & field: Muggleton’s crew impresses at Boulder triangular

BOULDER — Boulder High cross country fans needed only to witness how Monarch’s distance runners fared at BHS’ triangular track meet on Thursday afternoon to find reason for excitement about their new coach.

Monarch distance coach Mark Muggleton was hired this week to lead the BHS cross country team next fall. And his MHS charges made his resume look nice and shiny by sweeping the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs on the girls side and the 800 and 1,600 on the boys side in the meet with Boulder and Fairview.

Karina Mann won the 800. Kaitlyn Benner won the mile. Ashley Litoff won the 3,200. And Parker Sitton took the 800 and 1,600 on the boys side. Add to that a win in the girls 400 by Claire Green, also a member of the Coyotes distance crew, and it was an all-around solid day for Muggleton’s bunch as MHS won girls portion of the meet by two points over Boulder.

“He’s awesome,” Benner said of Muggleton. “He has a lot of experience. He’s always really encouraging. I’m happy for him that he got the job and happy for all the kids (at Boulder) who get to be coached by him.”

Muggleton — a five-time college All-American at Edinboro (Pa.) and Arkansas in the 1970s — has coached Monarch’s distance crew during track season for the past five years as an assistant to head coach Kent Rieder.

The Boulder gig will mark Muggleton’s first head coaching job, though not the first he’s been offered. Coming out of college, he was offered the head cross country job at Texas Tech but turned it down to move to Boulder.

Now, the owner of Continental Divide Sports, a sporting goods sales agency, is ready to take over a program of his own. Muggleton, who replaces longtime coach Monique Guidry, inherits a Boulder cross country squad with plenty of tradition, including state runner-up finishes on the girls side in 2009 and 2010.

“I’ve got the time, I’d love to give back and it’s a lot of fun,” said Muggleton, who ran on the American team at the world cross country championships in 1981. “With the talent in Boulder there’s something wrong if we’re not a state power in cross country every year.”

While Monarch’s girls won Thursday’s meet by placing different athletes first in several events, there were also several multiple-event winners on both the boys and girls sides.

Chief among them was Fairview’s Zane Vanderberg, who led the Knights to victory in the boys team standings.

Vanderberg took the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes and anchored the Knights’ 1,600 relay that was edged at the finish line by Boulder.

The FHS boys, state runners-up a year ago, rolled to the team crown Thursday despite missing one of their top runners in junior Rich Sanchez, who has been injured.

“Once he’s back I think we’ll have a really strong team,” Vanderberg said.

Hailey Hampson led the charge for the Boulder girls as they gave Monarch a run. The junior won the high jump and 300-meter hurdles and placed second in the 100 hurdles.

“The team has been a lot more motivated (this season),” Hampson said. “We have a lot of good freshmen who are going to help out.”

Hampson was beaten in the 100 hurdles by Fairview junior Justine Sherman, who also won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2 inches in her first crack at the event since eighth grade.

“So I guess I’ll be doing that again,” quipped Sherman, who also took second to Hampson in high jump.

Others who won two individual events Thursday included:

–Fairview’s Sawyer Hammond in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.

–Boulder’s Brad Werner in the shot put and discus.
