Girls basketball: Regis’ youth prevails vs. Highlands Ranch in 5A title game

BOULDER — “I’m doused,” Carl Mattei said after coming out of the locker room. The Regis Jesuit coach was wet from a celebratory Gatorade shower, but also wild, Saturday after his Raiders held off Highlands Ranch 53-46 to win their second Class 5A girls basketball state championship in five seasons.

The Canadian Mattei (2-2 in finals) had gone out and purchased a new suit for the occasion “and the kids have broken it in for me.”

Mattei can blame it on youth — the Raiders, minus a senior, went 26-2 in 2012-13 and beat longtime nemesis Highlands Ranch twice. After a one-year hiatus, when Legacy won the big-school crown, the power in the girls game returned to the Continental League.
