LONGMONT — The Longmont boys swim team graduated the bulk of its state meet scoring after last season but the Trojans are off to a good start in 2013.
At Centennial Pool on Tuesday, the Trojans defeated Northridge 121-26 to start the season 2-0.
Senior Sean Weston swam a time of 1 minute, 2.65 seconds to qualify for state in the 100-meter backstroke. He also helped the Trojans 200 medley relay team qualify with a 1:56.50.
“It was really exciting,” Weston said. “On my club team I was hitting all these times and I just came into this season hoping I could keep it up.”
Weston swam in several relays at state last season, as did junior Austin Bailey and Mateo Fortes. Before he qualified for the 200 freestyle against Greeley Central last week, he had not qualified for an individual event.
The Trojans graduated three-time state champion Connor Dwyer and Tony Huff, who placed top four in two events at the 4A finals. As a senior, Weston understands the Trojans must temper their expectations in 2013 but also sees potential in his teammates.
“I’m just trying to keep everybody pumped up and keep them excited,” Weston said. “I’m trying to make sure they don’t take it too bad if we don’t get first. We’re all starting well and we’re still really excited about swimming.”
Trojans sophomore Nick Vaughn scored a 164.32 to win the one-meter dive on Tuesday. He said this season is an interesting one for he and other younger Trojans, who will be counted on more to score points this season.
“You feel like you have a lot more responsibility and you get a sense of empowerment from that to work harder,” Vaughn said.
After coaching the Longmont girls the past three seasons, Jill LeGault has taken over as head boys coach as well after longtime coach Marie Huff resigned after last season. Although she said coaching boys is a different animal, LeGault’s been pleased with the Trojans’ early-season effort.
“They looked good today and they’re getting stronger,” LeGault said. “We’re dropping times where we need to see them and they’re starting to trust each other’s relays a little bit more, which allows for better swims and state qualifying times.”
LeGault said the Trojans are deeper in some events, including diving where they have six competitors. Overall, she said, they’re each swimming whatever events they’re asked and are improving rapidly.
“We’ve had two meets and two wins, so they’re filling in where they need to,” LeGault said. “We’ll probably feel it more at the bigger meets. But right now we’re just focusing on each meet as it comes and so far I couldn’t be happier.”
