PUEBLO — All season, the Pueblo West boys basketball team has used its unlimited long-distance shooting plan with mixed results.
In the Cyclones’ biggest game of the season, it worked to perfection and proved a season-ender for Silver Creek.
Pueblo West made nine 3-pointers to cruise past SCHS 68-58 Wednesday night in a Class 4A first-round state playoff game at Jerry Kersey Gym.
Silver Creek coach Bob Banning admitted his team could never recover after the Cyclones’ first-quarter barrage.
“We got down early and that was because they shot the ball incredibly well,” Banning said. “When we finally settled down it was an uphill climb. They are a good basketball team and they shot the ball really well, especially in the first half.”
West (12-12) advances to play Wasson (22-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Wasson High School. Silver Creek (11-13) lost for the sixth time in its final seven games.
Trey Fleming had a team-best 15 points for the Raptors, 11 in the fourth quarter as SCHS tried to rally.
The Cyclones dialed long distance immediately against the Raptors and had a crystal clear connection.
West jumped out to a 24-8 first-quarter lead on the strength of six treys — three by Cameron Barry, two by Logan Letofsky and one by Braydon Barry. Letofsky led all scorers with 24 points.
“We just wanted to get out and run and play our game,” said Cameron Barry, who had 23 points, including four treys. “We wanted to fast-break, share the ball and hit it if we are open. Our game plan is if you are hitting shots we will keep finding you to shoot.”
The Cyclones continued to step on the gas and with eight minutes to play they had a commanding 62-43 edge.
“Most teams play inside out and we play outside in,” West coach Bob Tyler said. “We launch until we start hitting and then we go inside after that. Cameron and Braydon are seniors and to have them come out and shoot like that is really big for us because it opens things up for Logen (Letofsky).”
