With state swimming in the books and state skiing taking place this weekend, state wrestling is on deck next weekend.
Area wrestlers try to earn their trips to the Pepsi Center for state at regionals on Friday and Saturday.
Seven of the BoCoPreps.com area’s 15 squads will convene in Frederick for the Class 4A Region 2 tournament. Wrestlers must place among the top four at regionals to qualify for state, and the Frederick tournament is no place to be on Saturday if you’re a middle-of-the-pack 182-pounder trying to move up.
In what is no doubt one of the more intriguing quirks of this weekend’s competitions, the top four 182-pounders in Class 4A — according to Tim Yount’s On the Mat Rankings — reside in Region 2. Mead’s Kyle Couch tops the list ahead of No. 2 Cosme Martinez of Windsor, No. 3 Forrest Wetterstrom of Longmont (who beat Couch last week) and No. 4 Josh Semmler of Roosevelt.
Plenty of other locals figure to fare well at the meet, with Erie’s Brandon Wetsch also heading in as the highest-ranked wrestler at his weight, fourth at 132.
All St. Vrain Valley schools — Erie, Frederick, Longmont, Mead, Niwot, Skyline and Silver Creek — except for Lyons will be competing in Frederick. Lyons heads to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling for the Class 2A Region 3 tournament.
Outside the SVVSD, meanwhile, the most action figures to come from 4A top-ranked Broomfield at the Region 3 meet at Mullen. If Yount’s rankings hold true, the Eagles will qualify at least nine wrestlers for state, with plenty of the other weights at the meet being devoid of marquee wrestlers and up for grabs.
Below is a list of where all area squads will compete this weekend. All regionals run Friday and Saturday.
5A Region 1 — Where: Smoky Hill HS. Local team: Legacy. Saturday finals: 4 p.m. for all placing matches.
5A Region 3 — Where: Loveland HS. Local teams: Centaurus, Fairview, Monarch. Saturday finals: 5 p.m. for 3rd/5th-place matches. Championships to follow.
5A Region 4 — Where: Standley Lake HS. Local team: Boulder. Saturday finals: 2:30 p.m. for 3rd/5th-place matches. 4 p.m. for championships.
4A Region 2 — Where: Frederick HS. Local teams: Erie, Frederic, Longmont, Mead, Niwot, Silver Creek, Skyline. Saturday finals: 1:30 p.m. for 3rd/5th-place matches. 5 p.m. for championships.
4A Region 3 — Where: Mullen HS. Local team: Broomfield. Saturday finals: 5 p.m. for all placing matches.
3A Region 2 — Where: Eaton HS. Local team: Holy Family. Saturday finals: 3 p.m. for 3rd/5th-place matches. 5 p.m. for championships.
2A Region 3 — Where: Northeastern JC, Sterling. Local team: Lyons. Saturday finals: 5 p.m. for 3rd/5th-place matches. Championships to follow.
