Amy Webb admitted she wasn’t actively seeking a head coach position. Yet this was one opportunity Webb simply couldn’t pass up.

Webb, who has spent five years as an assistant coach under Bob Smartt for the Fairview girls swim team, will take the reins of the Knights’ boys swim program this spring. Webb replaces Ted Romero, who resigned in order to pursue new opportunities with his personal fitness company.

“I’ve always been happy being an assistant, but this was a great opportunity,” said Webb, who also has been an assistant under Romero for the Knights’ boys team. “There was a little panic at first, but I’ve got some great assistants. And of course, the boys have offered to swim really, really well so they’ll make it easy on me.

“I love coaching, I love working with kids, so this was a natural move.”

The Fairview boys team finished seventh at state last year, and Webb just helped the Knights turn in an impressive third-place finish at the Class 5A girls state finals over the weekend.

A veteran coach of 18 years with the Boulder Valley Summer Swim League, this will be the first head coach position at the high school level for Webb, a Niwot graduate.

“My personal training business has some opportunities that I have to follow through with this spring,” Romero said. “I’m excited for Amy though. She’s a great coach and she’s been around the Boulder area for 15-plus years. She’s a great choice to carry over what we’ve built up over the past six years.”

Romero said he plans to retain his post as the head coach of the Monarch girls swim team.
