FORMER FAIRVIEW, HOLY FAMILY AD GETS UMPIRES’ HALL CALL
Tom Smith is known to many in the area as the former athletic director at Fairview and Holy Family high schools.
But Smith also has enjoyed a long career officiating prep sporting events over the years. In May, he’ll be inducted into the Colorado High School Baseball Umpires Hall of Fame.
Smith, who still umpires softball, umpired prep baseball in Colorado for 25 years until retiring before last season. Those 25 seasons in baseball included four appearances behind the plate for state championship games, including most recently Rocky Mountain’s victory over Air Academy in the 2008 5A game.
CHSAA TO CHARGE FOR LIVE STREAMING
The Colorado High School Activities Association announced Wednesday that it will start charging for the live internet streams of its state playoff broadcasts aired on CHSAA.tv.
The arrangement, through CHSAA.tv parent company Play On! Sports, is a trial run for the next two sports seasons, according to a press release. The trial will begin with next week’s Class 4A and 5A girls state swimming championships.
Prices for live events are $3.95 for a day pass, $6.95 for weekly access and $9.95 for monthly access. Archived events and highlights will remain free.
“We expect some of our constituents to be concerned, but at the same time we know that in order to develop a sustainable product, we have to find a way to make these broadcasts affordable for those producing them as well as for the consumer,” CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann said.
