Mead’s Kyle Couch wrestles his way to victory over Ponderosa’s Corry Williams in the 182-pound championship match on Saturday at the Top of the Rockies Invitational at Centaurus High School.

LAFAYETTE — There is no reclining in Kyle Couch.

That fact was more than evident in one of the weightiest wins in the wrestler’s career. The Mead junior did not just survive his first trip into the Top of the Rockies Invitational at Centaurus High School on Saturday. The 182-pounder downright thrived in some of the regular season’s most testing brackets.

Couch came out of the four-state invitational a champion, an accolade some wrestlers spend all high school chasing. And even when he was tested at the end, the junior was never caught napping.

“This is a big win for me, real big,” said Couch, who has a perfect 28-0 record on the year. “This was a tough tournament and I got tested.”

Couch survived a tight finals match with Ponderosa’s Corry Williams, outlasting the Class 5A wrestler for a 2-1 decision. The Mead wrestler earned the winning margin when Williams was called for stalling in the third period, a call Couch missed.

“I though it was still 1-1 and I was just shooting for overtime,” he said.

The Maverick’s unawareness of his lead might have been a blessing, given the junior stayed on the attack until the very end. He kept his opponent on his toes and never opened an opportunity to be whistled for stalling.

Couch was far from the only one heartened with the finish. Coach Ty Tatham was also impressed with his wrestler’s acumen when tested and believes he went a long way in sharpening himself for a state run.

“This is a pretty big measuring stick and I think he proved a lot to himself,” Tatham said. “He competed with a lot of the best in 4A and 5A. It showed us we’re on the right track.”

The tournament was a confidence booster for Couch, but his coach hopes the junior gets more out of the Top of the Rockies than just a mental boost. The coach said he felt his wrestler’s run should prove to him that his conditioning and techniques are both dialed in for the postseason.

Even with all Couch achieved at the tournament and the strides he made, Tatham is cautious about it going to his wrestler’s head.

“In three or four weeks, nobody will remember what you did here if you don’t get it done down in Denver,” Tatham said.
