Boys basketball: Young Pioneers’ rally falls short vs. Front Range Baptist

LONGMONT — The Faith Baptist boys basketball team has developed the habit this season of falling far enough behind that furious comebacks become necessary.

Unfortunately for the freshman-laden Pioneers (2-8, 2-3 Front Range Christian League), comeback bids are not a sustainable strategy for winning many games.

Against the league-leading Front Range Baptist Falcons on Tuesday, the Pioneers trailed by 15 points at halftime but cut the lead to six to start the fourth quarter. But in much the same way that falling behind has bitten them recently, the Pioneers couldn’t sustain the comeback pace and fell 68-54.

“The last three games we’ve gotten behind and we’ve had to claw our way back so we do have the mentality that we can get in a frantic mode, create some turnovers, get some shots and get back in it,” Pioneers head coach Jared Gunderson said. “But then we give up some easy baskets because we’re overplaying a lot and they beat us deep.”

Leading the Pioneers on Tuesday, twin brothers Adrian and Anthony Pavlov combined for 32 points. Junior David Stadnick hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points and freshman Caleb Pene scored six points.

With nine underclassmen on their 12-man roster, the Pioneers struggled against the more-experienced Falcons. But Anthony Pavlov said the team has focused on never giving up this season and is steadily building confidence.

“They’re the best team,” Anthony Pavlov said. “I know 100-percent that if we clean up a little stuff, we’ll be much better. We have a ton of freshmen on the team and if each guy can step up, and I know they will, we’ll be fine up against the best teams in the league.”

The Pioneers will head to Pueblo to face Parkhill Christian Academy on Friday.
