Cochi: Niwot volleyball gives football team a lunch-time lesson

Last Friday afternoon I heard via Twitter about an underground, high-stakes volleyball grudge match at the rec center in Longmont.

In a showdown of what would at the very least provide me with entertainment during my lunch break, the Niwot football team would be challenging their own Cougars volleyball squad to a volleyball match.

Rather than spend my lunch in my typical search for a burrito or a sandwich, I decided to take in a little lunch-hour volleyball. Or something similar to volleyball.

As I expected, when the volleyball players scored, it looked good. Clean, concise, coordinated.

When the football team scored, well it counted.

The volleyball players quickly took a 2-0 lead in the match.

But, proving their athlete status, the football players picked up steam in the middle sets. Maybe it was their matching homemade jerseys or the once-in-a-lifetime chance to do the volleyball student section cheers for themselves, but they actually seemed to find a bit of a rhythm.

In the end, the volleyball players’ experience proved too much. They won the match by a final score of 25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 16-25, 15-13.

Regardless of the score, the play was pretty entertaining. Not a bad way to spend a Friday lunch break.

Thank you Twitter. Thank you Cougars.
