JAVIER CASTRUITA, Boulder soccer — The junior midfielder scored several clutch goals during the Panthers’ drive to their first Class 5A state championship. In the quarterfinals against Rock Canyon, Castruita drew a penalty that left his lower leg black and blue, yet he nonetheless converted the penalty kick to provide Boulder’s only goal in a 1-0 win. Castruita helped knock off rival Fairview in the semifinals, converting a pass from Lake Brant to score the overtime winner in another 1-0 victory. Castruita capped his remarkable run by scoring a goal in the 7th minute to jump-start the Panthers toward their 3-1 victory against Smoky Hill in the title game on Monday.


KAILEE VAN TINE, Broomfield volleyball — Although Broomfield’s season came to an end with a pair of 3-1 defeats on the first day of the Class 4A state tournament, the senior setter made sure to end her career with a pair of standout performances. Van Tine registered 36 assists in the Eagles’ loss against Northern League rival Longmont, then added 31 assists and two aces during an elimination defeat against Coronado.
