LOVELAND — Down three points with less than nine minutes left Friday night, the Longmont High School football team lined up for a field goal, but a kick never came.
The Trojans faked the kick and starting quarterback Forrest Wetterstrom flew around the right side for a touchdown, the lead and consequently the game in a 38-13 Longmont triumph at Patterson Stadium.
“A field goal would have been big for them because it would have tied the game, but they made a good call,” Thompson Valley coach Clint Flick said. “We went for a block and missed and they scored a touchdown. It was a good call by (Longmont coach Doug Johnson). We didn’t do quite what we wanted to do obviously.”
Thompson Valley trailed 17-13 after the big play and started driving, but an interception return for a touchdown more than sealed the deal for the Trojans.
Longmont (3-3, 2-1 Northern League) owned the fourth quarter, putting up 28 points, including the game-changing trick play.
The final quarter was disappointing to Thompson Valley (3-3, 1-2), which had controlled the clock through the running game and solid defense. The Eagles forced a fumble at their own 1-yard line and things seemed to be going their way.
As their deficit grew, though, the turnovers went up as the Eagles tried to make plays to get back in the game.
The loss, especially the fashion of the loss, spoiled the otherwise exceptional night had by Marquez. He carried the ball for a game-best117 yards.
Both teams controlled the ball in the first half for a virtual draw. Thompson Valley made the first mistake fumbling the ball on its opening drive at the 12-yard line, setting Longmont up in nice field position following the return.
Longmont wasted no time striking on a 22-yard pass from Wetterstrom to wide receiver Eli Sullivan. However, two incomplete passes and a sack forced the Trojans to kick a 47-yard field goal to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
