LYONS — For Lyons High School at the 2012 Patriot League cross country meet, it was a Roberts family affair.

The son and daughter of head coach Mark Roberts, Paul and Miriam Roberts led the boys and girls teams to first and second place finishes, respectively.

Winning the conference title as a freshman, Paul Roberts set the new course record at Lyons High School with a time of 15 minutes, 57.7 seconds. He broke the previous record set by his older brother Andrew Roberts, who was on hand to see him do it.

“I wanted to push as hard as I could to the best of my ability for my brother and sister,” Paul Roberts said. “My brother was here, so it was a good day. It was good to have him cheering for me.”

Paul Roberts said he went out a little slower than he wanted to but was able to regain his pace. On one of the first frigid mornings, a light snow began to fall just as he was finishing his race.

The cold conditions, he said, helped him on his course record-breaking run.

“It was pretty nice, actually, pretty good running weather,” Roberts said. “It was maybe a little cold but it’s better than 80 degrees.”

The Lyons boys knew they were the underdogs against University and Frontier Academy. Paul Roberts said everyone stepped up and ran better than expected.

Brothers Joel and Marcel Such, who has been battling low iron levels, both ran personal records. Marcel Such took third in 16:53.0 and Joel Such took fourth in 17:08.1.

Matt Dillon turned finished 14th, and Mark Roberts said he was particularly proud of senior Levi Stone for running a personal best.

Leading the girls to a second-place finish just three points behind Estes Park, junior Miriam Roberts was hoping to knock off defending champion Kelsi Lasota from Estes Park. She finished in 19:42.5 behind Lasota, who defended her title with a 19:27.3.

“My goal was to beat Kels, but she got a little too far out ahead of me and I couldn’t pull her back in,” said Miriam Roberts, who did finish ahead of Frontier Academy’s Molly Morrison, who beat her earlier in the season. “We were hoping to get first and we just didn’t get those three points we needed.”

Lions senior Olivia Raspotnik finished in 20:46.8 to take fifth. Fellow senior Kelsey Miner took ninth with a 21:21.8 and freshman Sierra Tucker finished 20th with a 22:20.8.

With the conference meet in the books, the Lions will now turn their attention to the regional meet and then the state championships.

“We’ve been pretty conservative about how many races we’ve run,” Mark Roberts said. “We told our kids we were gonna be patient and focus on the championship part of the season. We’ll run intelligently at regionals but obviously our focus at this point is getting to the state meet and hopefully winning a couple state titles. That’s certainly been the goal all year.”Follow Brad on Twitter:
