Max Clark went from bubble rider Friday, to state qualifier.
The Peak to Peak senior earned a spot to the Class 3A state tournament after some number crunching opened two more berths in the event. The Colorado High School Activities Association balances how many golfers come out of each regional, after everything is said and done, by taking an equal percent from each tournament.
A late regional round added enough golfers to the overall mix to open the spot for Clark, which was a huge boost for John Thornbury and his Pumas. The Peak to Peak coach watched his senior have to suffer through being an alternate last season, a fate he thought Clark was destined to repeat this year after falling in a regional playoff Oct. 18 at Aurora’s Common Ground Golf Course.
Thornbury was as excited about the opportunity for his Pumas to compete as a team. With Clark jumping in with regional champion Behrod Keshtavar and Jack Cavanagh, the coach believes his team could make some noise at the Oct. 1-2 championship. But there are other reasons why Thornbury is pleased with the senior heading to Denver’s Pinehurst Country Club.
“It’s just much more meaningful to compete as a team,” he said. “And it’s a relief to see Max finally make it to state.”
