Football roundup: Longmont Christian notches first win; Lyons, Skyline fall on road

LONGMONT — Having started the season with three lopsided losses, the Longmont Christian football team may have been overlooked by some coming into Friday’s matchup with Rocky Mountian Lutheran.

But the Warriors made sure to make a statement early that they aren’t bagging their season.

Longmont Christian put up 33 points on the scoreboard in the first quarter alone, opening a 20 point advantage after the first 12 minutes of play en route to a 55-28 win.

Quaterback Michael Rampson ran all over the Eagles, rushing for 196 yards on 15 carries and four touchdowns on the night, three coming in the huge first quarter.

“He was our starting tailback last year and did great job this summer learning his technique at quarterback camps,” said head coach Jerry Martin. “He has great feet and is really hard to tackle in the open field. And he’s still a running back at heart, I think.”

After the opening barrage, Martin decided to take some of his starters out of the game to lessen the chance of a blowout. But Rocky Mountian Lutheran refused to go away, storming back to make big plays and forcing Martin to get his stars back in.

“We went into the locker room and refocused at halftime,” said Martin. “We came out and got our momentum back after that, and were able to close.”

The Warriors, who put up only 22 points in their first three games combined, continued their explosion in the third quarter. Aaron Rodarte caught a short touchdown toss from Rampson, and soon after Trevor Dahl intercepted a Rocky lateral and took it 55 yards to the house for another score.
