JOHNSTOWN — Following last week’s big win at home against Berthoud the Frederick High football team took to the road Friday, traveling to face Roosevelt, a squad that has given the Warriors trouble in the past.

The Warriors proved they were more than up to the task, scoring touchdowns on two of their first three possessions on their way to a 35-14 victory.

“Offensively, we got after them early,” head coach Thad Lear said. “And then I think we got them back on their heels with the two-touchdown passes, and that opened up the run in the second quarter.”

Quarterback Jaron Balman, who connected for five of his six completions in the first half, got things started for the Warriors with a 26-yard strike to Joe Wise and a 55-yarder to KC Rivera in the first period. Balman went on to finish with 129 yards passing on the night.

With the Roughriders defense reeling, running back Jacob Sleeth began to go to work. Sleeth took a handoff 54 yards for the Warriors’ third score of the night early on in the second quarter. He would finish the game with 20 carries for 137 yards.

Rivera and Balman both also rushed for scores in the second, allowing Frederick to take a commanding 35-0 lead into the locker room at intermission and enabling the Warriors to ride their defense to victory for the remainder of the ballgame.

“Our defense played great,” said Lear. “We attacked line of scrimmage and did a great job getting off the ball. They tried to run off tackle on us. But our linebackers did a great job of taking away the edge.”

Frederick must now regroup and prepare for next week’s battle with Silver Creek at home.

We got banged up a little bit, but we’ll get iced up tomorrow and we’ll go out and get better,” Lear said.
