Boys tennis: Monarch’s Nguyen, Wright key runner-up finish

Monarch’s Justin Nguyen hits a return during his No.1 singles championship match at the Longmont Invitational on Saturday.

LONGMONT — Monarch’s Justin Nguyen played great tennis through the first two rounds of the Longmont Invite this week but hit a rough patch in Saturday’s finals.

Nguyen was never able to find his rhythm against Windsor’s Mark Gueswell. But the Coyotes senior found a way to win 6-4, 6-2 and take home the No. 1 singles title.

Not moving to the ball as quickly as he normally does, Nguyen had to rely more on thinking ahead than hitting heavy shots.

“I wasn’t playing to well compared to the other days so I just had to keep grinding and keep the ball in,” Nguyen said. “It was more of a mental match than about where the ball was going.”

Helping the Coyotes to a second-place team finish, Mexican foreign exchange student Diego Trujillo lost 6-4, 6-3 in the finals to Fossil Ridge’s Tanner Trace. He is filling in for the Coyotes regular No. 2 player Jack Shanahan, who is out with a wrist injury.

Coming into the tournament, Coyotes senior Danny Wright knew he had an opportunity to win the No. 3 singles bracket. After getting through a tough first match against Longmont junior Cameron Yee, Wright went on to take first place. He defeated Fossil Ridge’s Max Weiner 6-3, 6-1 in the finals.

“I was just trying to focus on each match at a time and every point,” Wright said. “My first match was the most difficult. Once I got through that, I played a lot better.”

Broomfield finished seventh, led by a second-place finish from No. 3 doubles pair Will McShane and Ben Stevens. The Eagles duo lost 6-3, 6-4 to Fossil Ridge’s Kevin Schultz and Trevor Swanbom in the finals after hard-fought wins against Monarch and Alexander Dawson.

“We played pretty well but Fossil Ridge is a good team and they just overpowered us in the second set,” Stevens said. “Dawson was tough too but we were able to overcome that. Just playing in the finals was pretty cool.”
