Have I mentioned that I dislike preseason rankings?

Week 2 provided the perfect example of why preseason rankings are guesses at best for prep football. Four No. 1 teams were beaten, including 5A’s Columbine, 4A’s Monarch, 2A’s Florence and 1A’s Hotchkiss.

But all the carnage has in some ways made those classifications more interesting as we get to see how things will really shake out.

Class 5A has seen its No. 1 team go down two weeks in a row. So No. 1 is … ? Sure, Mullen lost 30-13 last week, but the Mustangs did so to one of the most storied programs in the country. So, while Pomona has a pair of nice wins, Mullen gets my nod at No. 1 thanks to its opening win over Valor Christian.

Wheat Ridge is a no-brainer — for now — in 4A after knocking off No. 1 Monarch.

In Class 3A, I’ve bumped Palisade over Silver Creek this week for the top spot. Yes, SCHS is 2-0 with a pair of solid wins. But for now, Palisade’s blowout wins over Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction Central — anyone notice how Central was tied with Longmont late on Saturday — get the nod. We’ll see how things continue to shake out.

Class 1A, the only other level for which I vote, was blown up last week. Four of the top seven teams lost, including No. 1 and No. 2. The guess here is the shuffle will likely continue for a couple of weeks. Stay tuned.
