Football: Silver Creek pulls off overtime victory in Nevada

FERNLEY, Nev. — The Silver Creek Raptors scrambled to make a season-opening trip to Nevada happen on short notice. And on Thursday they made all the effort worthwhile.

Kyle Kent scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in overtime to lift SCHS to a 19-13 victory over Fernley (Nev.) that was keyed by four forced turnovers by the Raptor defense.

The Raptors (1-0) were playing in Nevada because they found out less than a month ago that their originally-scheduled season opener had fallen through.

The game with Fernley came through quickly, but also came in Zero Week, a week earlier than SCHS had planned to open the season. And coach Mike Apodaca said his team looked like one that hadn’t had a full preseason to prepare at times.

“Fortunately what we talked about before the game is a W, and we were able to get that,” Apodaca said.

After trailing 10-0 early, Fernley battled back to tie the game at 10 and then again at 13 on a third-quarter field goal.

With Fernley driving in the fourth quarter, though, Silver Creek’s Collin Gibbs intercepted a pass in the end zone to preserve the tie and help send the game into overtime.

Angel Sanchez also nabbed an interception for SCHS, while Apodaca’s son, Andre, recovered a pair of fumbles.

The Raptors allowed just 194 yards of total offense.

“The player of that game was our defense,” Mike Apodaca said.

Silver Creek jumped on top early on a 65-yard touchdown run by Josh Quiroz. Ryan Charles added a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-0, and then hit a 25-yarder in the second quarter to give the Raptors a 13-10 edge at the intermission.

Quiroz led the way offensively with 127 yards rushing, while quarterback Ben Sjobakken threw for 142 yards.

After Silver Creek stopped Fernley on its possession in overtime, Quiroz ran for 8 yards on first down from the 10-yard line before Kent’s winning plunge.

“They’re just going to continue to get better,” Coach Apodaca said of his team. “And they just had to keep battling through the adversity.”
