Lindenstein: Prep sports scene ramps up entire month of August

Prep golfers in Colorado hit the course for season-opening practices on Monday, and they’ll be competing by Thursday.

Let the games begin.

The fun keeps ramping up for the rest of August. After golf, the rest of the fall sports begin play on Aug. 13. Boys tennis begins competition on Aug. 16 and softball on the 17th. On Aug. 30, the floodgates open with competition for cross country, football, gymnastics, boys soccer and volleyball opening up.

Of course we get a teaser the week before football season officially begins. While an effort by CHSAA the past couple years to even out the size of football leagues across the state has appeared successful in reducing the number of Zero Week games, a pair of local football teams do hit the gridiron early.

Longmont Christian hosts Caliche in 8-man play on Aug. 24, and 1A Nederland plays at Cornerstone Christian on Aug. 25 as small schools grab the early spotlight.

At BoCoPreps.com and our affiliated newspapers, it all means we’ll be busy between now and then previewing the various sports. Our boys golf preview runs Thursday with capsules on each team. Previews for every other sport besides football will be spaced out between now and Aug. 30. And starting Aug. 18, we’ll begin featuring every local football team, one or two per day, until the season begins in earnest on Aug. 30.

So be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (and tell your children, parents, grandparents and friends) and check back at BoCoPreps.com often to get your preseason fill.

The summer prep sports void is over. Get your sweatshirts ready.
