AURORA — Longmont/Erie’s fate in the 2012 Colorado Connie Mack State Tournament came down to the wire, but was ultimately snuffed out on a Regis Jesuit walk-off single in the seventh inning.
Regis hitter Andrew Schmidt broke the tie in the bottom half when he drove home teammate Brody Weiss to win the elimination game 4-3 at Regis High School.
Longmont/Erie was bounced from the tournament as a result of the loss, coupled with one earlier in the day to Slammers North, 9-3.
Despite the resounding defeat to Slammers-North in the morning, the Longmont/Erie players jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Regis in the afternoon, thanks to RBIs from Josh Crist and Taylor Dudley in the first inning, and a Regis error in the third.
But even though Regis was slow to put up runs on the scoreboard, the Raiders consistently amassed hits throughout the game to put pressure on the Longmont/Erie pitchers.
Longmont/Erie starter Jake Baker got out of jams with runners in scoring position in the second and third innings by keeping a cool head.
“Just slowing down and hitting spots,” he said. “Those are situations that I really try to get outs in rather than over pitching and trying to get strikeouts.”
Baker held Regis stayed tough but ultimately couldn’t hang on to the lead and ended up scattering eight hits over 52/3 innings.
One of Longmont/Erie’s bright spots was outfielder Joe Cinea, who went 3 for 4 with three stolen bases.
“I was seeing the ball pretty well today,” he said. “This guy left a couple of curveballs in front a little bit and I drove them to the right side.”
Cinea said the runs scored late in their loss to Slammers North gave them some fuel to compete hard against Regis.
“It gave us some confidence, which led into the second game, which gave us the hot start,” Cinea said.
Longmont/Erie coach Tom Fobes said that the team fought hard and, despite the losses, the players going back to their high school teams have plenty to be proud of. The team consists mostly of Longmont and Erie players who will still be in high school in the fall.
“I’m pleased with the guys’ work ethic and how they performed. I feel like we played pretty well all summer,” Fobes said. “There’s always work to be done, but I feel quite a few strides were made this summer, and guys progressed.”
The only hard parts to swallow were how close the final game was and the timely hits by Regis players.
“It’s a tough way to lose any game but especially when it turns out to be the last one of the year and they get two broken bat singles that score three runs,” he said. “That’s the game of baseball I guess.”
As for next summer, several players like Baker and Cinea will move on but Tom Fobes said the team will be back.
“That’s the plan. We like how it’s working,” he said.
