NIWOT — Mired in a six-game losing streak, the Colorado Twins twice found themselves one out away from a seventh straight loss against Longmont/Erie on Friday.

In the first game of a local Connie Mack doubleheader, the Twins came from behind two times to win 5-4 in nine innings. Each time the Twins were up against it, center fielder Trey Fleming came through.

“We came back hungry and we just wanted that win,” Fleming said. “We’ve had some rough spots on the season. It was really nice at least splitting and getting one win. It puts light in our eyes that we can do it and even if we’re down not to give up and still stay up in the dugout because anything can happen.”

With his team struggling to break the losing streak and trailing, Fleming tied the game twice. He hustled down the line on a ground ball, forcing an errant throw and allowing Andrew Stoops to score with two outs in the seventh inning. With two outs in the ninth inning, he capped a seven-pitch at bat with a double down the right field line that scored Chico Grine from first.

“On the error, I just tried to put the ball in play and do whatever I could to get on base,” Fleming said. “On the double, I was trying to see as many pitches as I could. Whenever I get two strikes on me, I try to drive it to the right side.”

After Fleming kept hope alive in the ninth, shortstop Scott Platt drove him in with a walk-off single.

“This game was good. We had good intensity,” Platt said. “We started swinging it late and it worked. We stayed in it and believed in each other and got it done.”

The Twins made the most of the brief window they received against Longmont/Erie starter Jake Baker, who allowed just two hits in 62/3 innings before running into trouble in the seventh.

Longmont/Erie won the second game 3-1 despite getting outhit 10-5. Longmont/Erie starting pitcher Colton Bishop pitched around 10 hits to walk away with a one-run complete game despite battling some fatigue.

“I felt OK. I didn’t have my best stuff,” Bishop said. “In my bullpen Wednesday, I stretched it out a few too many pitches. I didn’t really have all my arm strength.”

Bishop is no flame-thrower, even at full strength. But he said he tried to keep the Twins hitters off balance with his curveball.

“They did a pretty good job of making me throw strikes,” Bishop said. “The heart of their order is really tough. It was just about trying to throw strikes. I still walked a few today, but I was just trying to battle through each and every inning.”

With the split, Longmont/Erie improved to 17-10 overall, 12-4 in league. The Twins are now 6-15 on the season, 5-5 in league.
