Holy Family’s Ryan Willis takes the hand off from Tyler Hsin running in the 4 X 200 meter relay during Saturday’s Tiger Tornado Invitational trackmeet at Mike G. Gabriel Stadium.

BROOMFIELD — The 110-meter high hurdles is not Ryan Willis’ top race. But the Holy Family sophomore ran it like it was Saturday, to capture what has been an elusive goal.

Willis finally knocked off his school’s record in the event, en route to helping Holy Family sweep the boys and girls titles at the Tiger Tornado meet. The hurdle specialist finished the race in 15.15 seconds at the St. Jude Track and Field Complex to break the mark and reach a personal goal that at times this season teased the sophomore.

Willis had come frustratingly close to setting a new Tiger record, at one point even breaking the old one, only to have his time at the April 21 Bronco Invitational invalidated by the wind.

“It was a full sprint, which I haven’t been able to do yet,” Willis said. “It felt awesome … It was a relief.”

Willis had an overall impressive showing on the afternoon helping the Tigers collect four of their eight first-place finishes. The sophomore ran on the championship 800-meter relay (Gintas Jarasius, Scout Cox, Tyler Hsin and Willis) and 1,600 relay (Kyle Willis, Ryan Willis, Dylan Pilkington, Zach Disberger). He also won the 300 hurdles, but was far from pleased with his 40.80 in the race.

“I wanted to break 40 seconds in the race again, but I was pretty exhausted by the 300,” Willis said. “With all those events qualified, I’m setting up for a long state, preliminaries and finals.”

On the girls side, Rebecca Hermann has taken some time to warm up this season, but Saturday the defending Class 2A state 800-meter champion appeared to hit her stride. The Nederland senior knocked nearly 4 seconds off her previous best performance of 2012 to win the race handily in 2:21.23.

Hermann had a sizable lead coming into the final stretch with her next closest competition, Peak to Peak’s Dallas Frisbie, around 7 seconds behind her.

“It was just time for me to go in the season and make a run,” Hermann said. “I think right now, I’m ahead of last year and where I need to be.”

Khadijah Sayyid also appeared to be returning to state-championship form, but the Peak to Peak senior has had a much longer road to get there. This is the first season she has competed in track since winning the 100-meter dash her sophomore year.

Sayyid blew away her season-best time in the 100 Saturday, turning in a 12.46. But where the Puma really showed her grit was in the 400-meter relay. Her team (Morgan Hazzard, Natasha DeYoung, Erica Howard, Sayyid) trailed after a shaky third handoff, but Sayyid muscled her team to the win on the home stretch.

“The moment I got the baton I knew I had to make my move, ” Sayyid said. “I didn’t have any doubt we could win the race, because the other teams did not have that big of a lead.”

Peak to Peak finished second on the girls side of the competition, but could not keep pace with Holy Family’s eight first-place finishes. And there were familiar faces pushing the Tigers to the top in nearly all their events. Ashley Burk (3,200-meter relay, 1,600 relay), Alexis Gerry (discus, shot put) and Mckenzie Zeman (800 relay, 400 run) dominated the competition.

“We ran in the St. Vrain Invitational yesterday and saw a lot of good teams there too,” Zeman said. “It was tiring, but it helped spur us on.”
