Shelton: Marcovecchio earns PCSC honors with record-breaking offense

It appears former Legacy softball players are a hit no matter where they land after high school.

Former Lightning, present University of Northern Colorado star Melissa Marcovecchio April 24, earned Pacific Cost Softball Conference honors. The Bears’ second baseman was Mountain Division Player of the Week with an offensive explosion that set a conference record.

The freshman hit three triples in Northern Colorado’s series opener against Idaho State to set a new PCSC single-game record. Marcovecchio went 9-of-16 in the weekend series against the Bengals, finishing with nine extra-base hits and seven RBIs to earn her first Play of the Week honors.

Marcovecchio has been an offensive machine in her first season in NCAA Division I softball. She has the Bears’ second best batting average (.366), second-most runs (30) and third-most RBIs (27). But it is her extra-base hits where Marcovecchio has really left her mark. The freshman now leads the nation in triples with 11 on the season. She also has 11 doubles.
