BOULDER — It was a quick turnaround after one of the premiere swimming events of the regular season, the Boulder County Invitational, and Fairview boys swimming coach Ted Romero figured it was as good a time as any to allow his swimmers to test their mettle in some of their secondary events.

However, secondary events or not, passion and intensity always are at the forefront whenever the Knights line up on the starting blocks against cross-town rival Boulder.

Fairview made sure it secured bragging rights over the Panthers on Thursday, winning 10 of 12 events to run away with a 129-51 victory in a dual meet at the South Boulder Recreation Center.

“Overall, the meet wasn’t quite as fast as it has been because of BoCo last week and the busy schedules over the last 10 days for both teams,” Romero said. “It came down to racing today, and I think the guys really did well racing.”

Fairview swept all three the relay races and dominated the individual events, as well.

Logan Garbarini led the way for the Knights as the lone Fairview swimmer to capture first place in two events, winning the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 2.34 seconds, and adding another victory in the breaststroke (1:04.40).

The Knights also received individual victories from senior Connor Corrigan (200 freestyle), Gabe Muir (100 butterfly), Tim Soderlund (100 freestyle), and Alex Walton (500 freestyle).

Walton, the 500 freestyle winner at the BoCo Invite on Saturday, was one of only a handful of Knights who competed in one of their primary individual events. Sophomore Miles MacKenzie competed on all three of the Knights’ victorious relay teams.

“I like doing some of the smaller meets because it’s a lot less pressure,” Garbarini said. “I can really put my best effort into it and not really feel any pressure from anyone else. But it’s also great to have some great competition.

“Boulder was out here and they’re always good competition. It was a good race, and there wasn’t that much pressure like BoCo. Fortunately I had more spread-out events, so I was able to cool down more and that really helped me.”

Fairview was prevented from making a clean sweep of the entire meet by the efforts of Boulder freshman Christian Feiler.

Feiler collected a pair of first-place marks for the Panthers, edging Corrigan to win the 100 backstroke and narrowly out-touching MacKenzie to take first in the 50 freestyle.

“It feels great to contribute to the team,” Feiler said. “It felt good to be in my first Boulder-Fairview meet as a freshman. I’m learning what a great team we have. My times were a little down from training all week, but I’m just going to try and keep cutting down on my times to see what I can do at state.”
