Track & field: Boulder’s Lewis wins stacked 3,200 at Longmont Invite

Boulder’s Erin McLaughlin runs to a second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run on Saturday at the Longmont Invitational.

LONGMONT — Boulder’s Sam Lewis knew the 3,200-meter run at Saturday’s Longmont Invite would turn into a three-runner competition between Pomona’s Alaina Anderson, Niwot’s Elise Cranny and herself.

The three distance runners battled way out in front of the others. All three shattered the previous meet record held by Greeley Central’s Allyson Parks, but Lewis finished in 11 minutes, 8.86 seconds to take first place.

“I was really excited because they’re both amazing runners,” Lewis said. “I talked to them before the race and I was like, ‘Alright ladies, we can totally run under 11:10 today and if we run together we can make it happen.’ They were on board and it worked out really well.”

The performance was Lewis’ best so far this season and helped the Panthers girls finish eighth behind Loveland, Berthoud, Green Mountain, Greeley Central, Niwot, Monarch and Broomfield.

Cranny’s finish and effort in the relays was huge for the Niwot Cougars. But Kelsey Traxinger was the Cougars leader on Saturday, finishing first in the 400 and fifth in the long jump.

“I think we did really good and I’m really happy,” Traxinger said. “Our 4×8 broke our school record and the meet record. It was good competition and it was close. We were definitely pushed a lot.”

The Cougar girls’ 3,200 relay finished in 9:35.84 and broke the Niwot school record by nearly four seconds, according to Traxinger.

In the throws, Silver Creek’s Valarie Allman set new meet records in both the girls shot put (38 feet, 111/2 inches) and discus (142-4).

“It was an awesome day,” Allman said. “I did well and my team did really well. Some of our athletes were really excited because we had some PRs today, which is awesome.”

On the boys side, Broomfield took the overall team win with 116 points. The Eagles got most of their scoring in the relays. Harrison Einspahr anchored the 400 and 800 relays to first-place finishes.

“Honestly, it’s been a big surprise for a lot of us because we’ve had a few sophomores running the relays,” Einspahr said. “We’ve started moving kids around and today we dropped (the times) by about 0.2. We had some trouble with some handoffs.”

Longmont’s Miles Bergner set a meet record with a 153-10 discus throw.

“I was kind of scared walking in the door because I saw big guys like Joey O’Connor (Windsor) and Alex Kozan (Valor Christian),” Bergner said. “I was a little intimidated but I just thought to myself, ‘Well, here it goes. I gotta really chuck one.’ I just went with my gut, went up there and kind of just threw it. It felt good coming out of my hand but I didn’t think it would go that far.”

Eighteen total meet records were set on Saturday, including girls pole vault, girls 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relays, 110 hurdles, 1,600 run and the 100 dash. Boys records were set in the pole vault, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 relays, the 3,200 run and the 100 and 200 dashes.
