Fairview Knights senior Shane O’Neill will travel with the Colorado Rapids Reserve this weekend.

Shane O’Neill, the boys basketball player of the year, has opted out of tonight’s statewide all-star game, “The Show,” at the Pepsi Center in order to pursue a sudden opportunity with the Colorado Rapids Academy.

O’Neill, a senior from Fairview and one of the top soccer prospects in the nation, will join the Colorado Rapids as they travel to Salt Lake City this weekend. A member of the Rapids Academy, O’Neill will be in uniform for the Rapids Reserve squad when they face the Real Salt Lake reserves on Sunday.

Although O’Neill has suited up for the Rapids Reserves before, this will mark his first road trip with the club. The University of Virginia recruit also will be one of four Academy players in uniform for the Reserves, continuing an emerging trend under technical director Paul Bravo and first-year head coach Oscar Pareja that is bringing an increased emphasis on the Rapids’ developmental program.
