LONGMONT — At Saturday’s season-opening RE-1J Invitational, Longmont pole vaulter Steven Wacker got the chance to face his top competition for repeating as 4A state champ.

Pushed by Trojans teammate Derek Wing and Niwot’s Dillon Manzanares, Wacker jumped a personal-best 15 feet, 7 inches. Not only did the jump set a new meet record, it also set a new Everly-Montgomery Field record.

“We’re the top three in the state at every meet,” Wacker said. “That’s how I expect the whole year is gonna go so it was really cool to start the year off right. I’d rather have the competition than to have nobody pushing to go to higher heights.”

Wacker locked up first place after he cleared 15 feet. But he wanted to try to beat the current stadium record of 15 feet, 6 1/2 inches. The bar went up to 15-7 and Wacker went over it on his third try.

“It was pretty crazy. I was just trying to get a good start to the season but I didn’t expect that to happen,” Wacker said. “It was just a really good feeling to get the blood moving and start the season off.”

Wacker’s jump helped the Longmont win the boys team title with 122 points. The Trojans boys edged Skyline — led by Richard Feltenberger, who set a new meet record of 51 feet, 83/4 inches in the shot put — by just half a point.

In the sprints, defending 3A state champ Alex Mead set new meet records in the 100-meter (11.12 seconds) and 200-meter (22.27) dashes. The Mead junior also ran in the Mavericks’ 400-meter relay team that set a new meet record of 44.07 seconds.

Niwot’s Lorne Jenkins set a new meet record with a 22-foot, 2 1/2-inch long jump. For defending 2A champion Lyons Lions, who co-hosted the meet with Longmont, the boys 800-meter relay team set a new meet record with a time of 1:32.22.

A few surprises on the boys side included Skyline freshman Sam Berg winning the 3,200 and Frederick taking first in the 3,200 relay.

“We haven’t even practiced it,” Warriors senior Kevin Retchless said. “We just threw it together and took first.”

On the girls side, Niwot took control early and powered through the meet, winning seven events to take the team title with 235.16 points. Erie, led by Chelsea Martus’ first-place finish in the 200-meter dash and wins by the 3,200 and 800 sprint medley teams, was second with 133.83 points.

Niwot sophomore Elise Cranny took first in the 400 and the 800, and along with Deyja Enriquez, Dana Maydew and freshman newcomer Rachel Sharpe, set a new meet record of 4:12.62 in the 1,600 relay.

“Our team is really strong this year and we have a lot of young members,” Cranny said. “The first meet is always a little hard because you have to teach them everything. But everyone did really well. Rachel did really well and she got a really good split for her first meet.”

Skyline’s Deandra Elcock took first in four events despite missing practice time to play soccer.

“I felt frustrated at first because I haven’t been here a lot because of soccer,” said Elcock, who won the 100-meter dash, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump. “I just trusted myself from last year and did what I knew how to do it paid off.”

For the Lyons girls, the defending 2A state champions, junior Nola Basey dominated the high jump. Her leap of 5-6 won easily and set a new meet record.

“I felt pretty good today. The weather was great,” said Basey, who took second at state last year. “This was the first meet of the season so let’s just hope it keeps getting better. I’m hoping to get the school record, which is 5-7.”

After finishing third at state in the discus last season, Silver Creek junior Valarie Allman set a new RE-1J meet record, throwing 138-11. She also took first in the shot put with a toss of 33-11/2, a half-inch farther than Lyons’ Michelle Hickey.

“It definitely shows that I have a lot to work on, so it’s good that it’s the first meet of the season,” Allman said. “I’m excited to see what it can lead to.”
