Track & field: Felkley starts hot in quest for school PV record

BOULDER — Mackenzie Felkley is an adrenaline junkie, an obsession he readily confesses to without hesitation.

With that sort of obsession, it seems obvious that Felkley, a senior at Boulder High, would have gravitated naturally toward the pole vault pit when he joined the Panthers track and field team three yeas ago as a freshman. Surprisingly, it required the prodding of Boulder’s pole vault coach, Justin Purcell, in order for Felkley to uncover his calling.

Three short years later, Felkley clearly is making huge strides. On Saturday, the senior served notice that he will be a force to reckon with this season, opening the 2012 campaign by finishing second at the Boulder Invitational.

“On my first day of high school track the pole vault coach approached me to try it out. Right away I loved it,” Felkley said. “I’d seen it before, but I didn’t even realize it was a high school event. Now, I feel amazing, going from around seven-feet starting out to my PR last year of 13-9. I’ve been making pretty big jumps from year to year. I just started to get some offseason work this past offseason, and I think it’s really going to help me this season.

Felkley finished second behind Broomfield senior Isaac Wilson on Saturday, posting a mark of 13 feet, 3 inches that was six inches shy of Wilson’s victorious effort. It was an impressive start for Felkley, a state qualifier the past two seasons who placed 11th at state last year. He owns a personal-best mark of 13-9, though he has much bigger targets in his sights for this season.

“I’m getting recognized by some bigger schools, and I want to keep going with that,” said Felkley, who also finished fourth in the 110 hurdles. “I want to break the Boulder High record, which is 15 feet, 2 inches. This is definitely a good one to start out the season. I’m really excited about finishing up the rest of the year, especially starting off at such a good height. I’m only six inches from my PR at the very first meet.”

The powerhouse programs from Fort Collins ran away with the team title in both the boys and girls divisions, but the local schools acquitted well. The Broomfield boys finished second, getting a win in the 800 relay while also netting an individual win from Wilson. Fairview’s girls squad also finished second behind a winning effort in the 800 relay in addition to a win by sophomore Justine Sherman in the 100-meter hurdles.

Shining Mountain senior Birdie Hutton was the other individual standout, recording wins in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs.

“The group overall, I thought we did great,” Fairview coach Melissa Spencer said. “It was good to see some depth that we didn’t really know we had before. We have a lot bigger team this year. I think we have about 170 kids on the rosters. With that many, sometimes it’s hard to sort through what all you have. A lot of people had PR’s today, which is really amazing for the first meet of the season.”
