For the second time this winter, playing time trumped the allure of a Division-I program for a Fairview baseball player.
Senior Jake Olsen this week signed with Black Hawk College in Moline, Ill. Olsen accepted a full scholarship with the school rather than take the Iowa Hawkeyes’ offer to walk on.
Knights senior Rocky DeSantis a few weeks ago signed with Garden City in Kansas rather than accept a partial scholarship offer to New Mexico State.
Olsen — who played third base last year but will play shortstop this spring for Fairview and for Black Hawk — said the main factor in his decision, much like DeSantis, was to get more at-bats early in his career and then try again for a scholarship at the D-I level.
Olsen joins a Black Hawk program that went 44-9 last season, won the Arrowhead Conference and finished the year ranked 10th nationally in the NJCAA poll.
“I figure I’m very excited,” Olsen said. “Obviously they know what they’re doing.”
