Girls basketball: Peak to Peak girls cruise in 3A tourney opener

BAYFIELD — The Peak to Peak Pumas rolled to a 52-32 road win in their opening-round 3A playoff game against Grand Valley at Bayfield High School.

Led by 20 points from senior Khadijah Sayyid, who averages 20.4 a game, the Pumas jumped to a 31-6 lead at the half and never looked back.

Peak to Peak dominated on defense, led by Ivy Devries — who posted a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double — and Katharine Kia’s 12 rebounds and six steals.

“Our defense really quickened and we made our shots when it mattered,” Peak to Peak coach Chad Rathbun said.

With the win, the Pumas improved to 16-7 on the season. Peak to Peak, seeded 11th, will face No. 6 in the Sweet 16 today for a trip to next week’s quarterfinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bayfield High School in southwestern Colorado.
