Girls basketball: Silver Creek cruises past Longmont after slow start

LONGMONT — One side of the rivalry can’t wait for the 4A girls state playoff brackets to be announced on Sunday.

The other side is looking forward to being a major player in the 2013 March madness and beyond.

Silver Creek enters the postseason with some momentum after a 51-33 home victory over Longmont on Thursday night.

The Raptors (18-5, 11-3) trailed 5-2 after eight minutes before opening the second quarter with a 13-0 run capped with a 3-pointer by Shelby Keil.

“I thought at both ends of the floor we were a little slow out of the gate,” Silver Creek coach Dan Kloster said. “On offense, I thought we were taking care of the ball, we just weren’t making much happen.”

The home team outscored Longmont 21-5 in the second quarter and took a 13-point lead into the locker room after Ana Gurau made a basket at the buzzer.

“We had to work for it. You have to give Longmont credit because they came ready to play us,” Kloster said. “I thought we did a good job handling the ball and our defense gave them problems when we finally picked it up.”

Silver Creek smothered the Trojans (5-18, 4-10) 58-30 in the first meeting between the crosstown Northern League foes in January.

After the Raptors opened the third quarter with seven unanswered points to extend the lead to 20 points, the visitors answered back with a 7-0 counterpunch.

Longmont’s rotation includes freshmen sisters Lacy and Lyndie Haddock and sophomore sisters Anna and Kathryn Schell.

“These kids are just going to get better. They’re going to play a lot together this summer,” Longmont coach Jay Darien said. “We’re going to get our gym back. It has been under construction the last few years, and that has just killed us. We have our facilities back and the bar will be back high.

“We’ll chase conference championships and try to get back to the Final Four.”

Silver Creek is 12-2 over the last 14 games with both losses coming against 4A powerhouse Broomfield.

“We’re feeling pretty comfortable and confident going into the playoffs,” Kloster said. “Once you get into playoff time, you can’t have any bad nights. That will end your season.”

Gurau led a balanced attack for Silver Creek with 13 points on senior night.

“We have a bunch of kids who can step up and put points on the board or play good defense,” Kloster said. “Tonight it was Ana’s turn to step up and lead us in scoring. I thought she had a good game.”

Kathryn Schell led the Trojans with 11 points.

“We’re starting to figure it out. We still didn’t attack their press aggressively enough,” Darien said. “But these kids are starting to see the light come on. We’re a far cry from when we played Silver Creek last time.”
