Cross country: Nederland’s Robinson chooses Naval Academy, Monarch’s Webb picks Penn

Kirk Webb and Kelley Robinson were’s cross country runners of the year last fall after stellar senior seasons that included state titles.

Now the pair have made their college choices official.

Webb signed with Penn in a ceremony at Monarch this week, while Robinson received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy this week, and is jumping at the chance.

Webb won the Class 5A state cross country title last fall and is one of the state’s top distance threats heading into track season, something he trained for exclusively this winter rather than playing basketball.

“I can’t wait,” Webb, who wants to be a doctor, said of getting to his college program. “I have senioritis pretty bad right now actually.”

Robinson won her third 2A cross country crown in leading the Panthers to their fourth team title in a row. And she already owns four state titles on the track heading into her final prep season.

She chose Navy over several other schools, including Air Force, Penn, Boston and Arizona State.

“I’m super excited,” said Robinson, who will run in the Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho this weekend. “I feel like I’m doing something bigger than just going to college. Navy was my top choice. If I got the appointment I knew I was going to go there.”
