Boys basketball: Wright leads Skyline in come-from-behind win over Roosevelt

LONGMONT — The Skyline boys basketball team trailed Roosevelt for the majority of Tuesday night’s game. But the Falcons hung around long enough and eventually the game broke in their favor.

Senior forward Tyler Wright scored 22 points to lead the Falcons to a 73-65 win over the Roughriders in Tri-Valley League play.

“I guess it felt smooth, you know,” Wright said. “We had four games in five days last week, so I had time to rest my legs and I felt fresh today.”

The Falcons (8-14, 6-7 Tri-Valley) trailed by as many as 10 points in the third quarter. But they started getting stops on defense, led by Colton Dabney, who finished with 10 points and four blocks. And shooting guard Dustin Mandrell caught fire from long range.

Mandrell hit four 3-pointers and scored all 17 of his points in the second half.

“The first two quarters nothing was falling for me,” he said. “Coach just told me to go out there and if I’m open to fire away. I fired away and eventually they started falling and I got my rhythm.”

Senior point guard Marcus Rice stole the ball and shot a layup to give the Falcons a 59-58 lead with 5:07 remaining in the game. His eight fourth-quarter points paced the Falcons down the stretch.

“I saw the loose ball and I just took off after it,” Rice said. “I knew I had a clear path to the basket so I just took it.”

The Falcons’ plan is to try to finish 7-7 in the Tri-Valley schedule. It’s all on the line Thursday, when the Falcons will end the regular season at Fort Morgan. If they win, they could still have a shot at making the state tournament.
