Girls basketball: Longmont Christian seniors too much for Dawson

LONGMONT — The Longmont Christian girls gasketball team won Friday’s conference game against the Alexander Dawson Mustangs 44-33.

Led by seniors Christina Ehr and Keara Lenehan, who both finished the game in double-figure scoring, Longmont Christian never trailed after the first quarter and made four 3-point shots in the second half to secure their lead.

“Finally we put a whole game together, which is something we’ve been struggling with all year,” Longmont Christian head coach Dave Stoecker said. “This is the best game we’ve played from start to finish.”

Ehr played particularly strong in the first half, giving her team’s offense a boost by scoring 11 of her 13 total points.

“It was nice to see the team play well together like that,” Ehr said. “I’ve had some issues with fouls this year but I was happy with how I played tonight.”

Alexander Dawson rallied at the beginning of the third quarter, narrowing Longmont Christian’s lead to just 22-20 after a basket by sophomore Nicole Towner.

Longmont Christian answered back, however, with three consecutive 3-pointers, two by Lenehan, and that proved to be the turning point in the game. Longmont Christian never led by fewer than 10 points for the entire fourth quarter.

Stoecker believes that Longmont Christian can ride the momentum from this game and finish the season strong, as long as the Warriors can avoid the unforced errors that have hurt them this season.

“We’ve lost games against good teams that we could’ve won if it hadn’t been for the mental mistakes that we made,” Stoecker said. “We eliminated that some today and that’s what it’s going to take down the stretch. We just have to play within ourselves.”

Fiona Bell led Dawson in scoring with nine points.

The win improved Longmont Christian’s record to 10-8 overall, 4-4 in Mile High League play. Dawson fell to 5-11, 1-5 in league play.
