Potential Olympic medalist Missy Franklin will compete in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke for Regis Jesuit at the Class 5A state finals on Friday and Saturday.

Raiders coach Nick Fraser Smith consulted with Franklin about which events she would tackle. In typical Franklin fashion, the junior phenom was game for anything.

“It’s the events that work for us as a team,” Fraser Smith said. “To be honest, when I talked with Missy, she said she would do anything the team needed. I could have put her in the breaststroke and she would have done it. As a team, I think this is the best way to go.”

Franklin, the world record holder in the backstroke, is the two-time defending state champion in the 50 freestyle and the backstroke. Franklin also owns the state record in both events — 22.41 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 52.30 seconds in the 100 backstroke.

Fraser Smith declined to reveal which relay events Franklin will compete in, although last year she led the Raiders to victories in the medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Regis Jesuit set a state mark in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:22.42.

Franklin’s Raiders will be vying for the team championship against Cherry Creek, Fairview, and Boulder, and her participation at the state final has ensured there will be an electric atmosphere at the Edora Pool and Ice Center in Fort Collins.

All-session and Saturday passes have sold out online and a limited number of individual session tickets will be available at the door on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Additional ticket information is available at www.chsaa.org.
