Boys basketball: Silver Creek withstands Mountain View’s late rally

LOVELAND — The Silver Creek High School boys basketball team knew going into Friday night’s Northern Conference matchup that despite Mountain View’s 1-13 record, the host Mountain Lions still deserved the Raptors’ respect. And it took only one quarter of play to prove why in the 60-53 Raptors win.

The game was tied at 14 after one quarter. But after outscoring MVHS 13-4 in the third quarter to go up 43-31, it appeared the Raptors would cruise to an easy win. However, the Lions wouldn’t go down without a fight, as their 9-0 run three minutes into the fourth quickly turned the game into a one-point affair at 51-50 with just over two minutes to play.

That’s when Silver Creek seniors Patryck Woodley-Minter and Austin Apodaca gathered their team for a quick pep talk, as the Raptors had just missed the front-end of a one-and-one on three of their last four possessions to help fuel the Lions’ rally.

“We pulled our team together as seniors and said, ‘it’s our game to win or lose, and we need to step it up and make our free throws,’ and that’s what we did,” Woodley-Minter said.

The pep talk worked, as Silver Creek responded with a 9-3 run to close the game, evening its conference mark at 3-3 while improving to 6-7 overall.

Woodley-Minter was dominant all-around, defending the paint and forcing the Lions to settle for jumpers on one end, and scoring a game-best 21 points on the other.

“We knew we were going to be bigger than them and more athletic, so we just worked on making sure we made them become shooters and see if we could out-rebound them,” said Woodley-Minter, whose 21 points were also a season-best. “And it worked.”
