Boys: John Cooper, Niwot soccer

Cooper didn’t start the season at goalkeeper for the Cougars. But when Josh Watt went down just before the playoffs and the team needed him, he stepped up to the challenge. Cooper helped the man-down Cougars get past Air Academy in the Class 4A state quarterfinals by making a diving save in a penalty shootout to give his team the lead. He also made a diving save on a free kick to keep the Cougars semifinal tied 0-0 against Evergreen. “I don’t think I’ve been scored off a free kick since I was six,” he said.

Girls: Kelly Graham, Longmont volleyball

Always steadfast, the senior setter has helped guide the Trojans through adversity this season. When the Class 4A Region C tournament rolled around, she led the Trojans to a regional title with 103 assists and 28 kills in three matches, including a win over Coronado. “We knew Coronado was really tough, so we had the goal of just getting to state instead of actually being regional champions,” she said. “But we did it, and this means so much to all of us.”
