Holy Family’s Alex Toderica’s day went from memorable to forgettable as fast as an official can flash a red card.

The junior midfielder recorded his third straight hat trick, but was ejected from the game late in the Tigers’ 3-0 win over Fountain Valley in the second round of the Class 3A state soccer playoffs.

The game was played at Peak to Peak High School because the field at Holy Family still had snow from a mid-week storm on it.

The red-card situation began when Toderica was taken out in the box and no call was call made. After talking to a kid on his side about what happened, that’s when things started to heat up.

“I was walking back and I heard something from my left and they (officials) thought it was me dropping an F-bomb. That’s a straight red in CHSAA,” Toderica said. “I didn’t say anything, I heard it too but I didn’t say anything. It bothers me, I’m captain for a reason, I don’t say stuff like that.”

Because Toderica received the red card he will not be able to play in Holy Family’s (14-2-1) quarterfinal match this Thursday.

Holy Family coach Jim Schuster would like to have his captain on the field, but he knows that there are other guys that are just as talented as Toderica.

“It takes 11 guys to win a game,” Schuster said. “If the defense shuts out the other team like we did today and we get just one goal from Preston (Arguello) or Nick (Rhoden) or any of the other guys, they are all quite capable of scoring.”

Toderica’s three goals were scored in three different ways. The first goal he received a corner kick from Arguello, fired a shot that was saved by a Fountain Valley (11-5) defender, but the ball when right back to Toderica and his second effort found net.

On his second goal, he got a shot on net, but as one of the Danes defenders was trying clear out the ball it hit his foot and went back into the net.

The third goal was the best looking of the three. On a free kick he was able to bend the ball around the Fountain Valley wall of defenders and out of the reach of Danes goalkeeper Matt Gilbert.

“You can’t do much about the third goal,” Fountain Valley coach Derek Segesdy said. “We’re pushing forward, that’s the price you pay to try and get back the two goals. The third goal you’ve got to take it for what it is.”

While the offense was looking good, Tigers freshman goalkeeper Tucker Schneider was doing his best to keep Fountain Valley off the board.

After playing a near flawless regular season, Tucker admitted that the playoffs are something completely different.

“As playoffs came I started shaking a little bit,” Schneider said. “First game went by and we played pretty well. After this game I think I put up a pretty good performance so I’m confident now.”
