LOVELAND — There was enough yardage, especially through the air, to score a few more points. But more often than not, Skyline’s offense didn’t click under pressure in a 50-9 Northern Conference loss to Mountain View at Patterson Stadium on Friday night.

Skyline (1-6 overall, 0-2 in the 3A Northern Conference), picked up its lone touchdown on the night on a 1-yard run from Garret Angstead, cutting into the Mountain Lions’ (5-2, 2-0) lead at 13-7. But it was the one drive on the night that had some meat from start to finish.

“I think we tried to get the ball in our skill players’ hands, and we tried to loosen up their defense a bit, and we had some success,” Skyline coach Kevin Rice said. “But when we needed some critical plays in critical situations, we just didn’t quite have it. Overall, there was some real positives on offense and glimpses of the type of offense we can become if we get a little bit of execution.”

Most of them were produced off the arm of Angstead. He hit 22 of his 37 passes in the game, good for 261 yards and without a turnover. Austin Gutierrez was his main target, snaring eight passes for 87 yards. But there was little ground game for balance (just 97 yards), and the defense gave up too many big plays to the Lions, who had scoring runs of 60 and 66 yards in the contest.

“I think the way we moved the ball against a good defense, even if we didn’t finish with the points, is something we can build on,” Rice said. “At times, we had some good defensive effort, but we just have to shore up every spot.”
