LYONS — Playing defense doesn’t give Levi Campbell many opportunities to score.

The Lyons senior got a couple chances Friday, though, and he took advantage of them.

Campbell scored two touchdowns and helped Lyons roll to a 45-12 win over visiting Cornerstone Christian.

Campell picked up a blocked punt and returned it for a touchdown. On another Cornerstone Christian punt, the punter fumbled the snap and Campbell scooped that up and scored another touchdown.

“It was really exciting because they were my first two touchdowns for the year,” said Campbell, who also had 10 tackles. “I don’t get to run the ball.”

Lyons (6-1, 3-0) took another step toward the Class 1A Metro North championship. All it needs to do to wrap it up is knock off Clear Creek (1-6, 1-1) in the season finale in two weeks.

“It was huge because it likely gave us the conference,” Campbell said. “That gets us to the playoffs.”

Lyons head coach John Nichols warned his team to not get complacent against Cornerstone Christian (3-4, 1-1).

“We were a little flat up in Nederland (the week before), so we talked to our kids about playing harder,” Nichols said. “We knew (Cornerstone) was going to be riding high a little bit.”

Lyons took care of that early, though, rolling to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter and 42-0 at the half.

Jordan Melani ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns on six carries to lead the offense.

The star of this one, though, was Campbell.

“It was definitely as fun as it gets,” said Campbell, who gave much of the credit to his teammates. “It was one of the funnest games I’ve had in a long time.”

NOTES: Forrest Donnell was 6-for-6 on extra points and booted a 30-yard field goal. … Anthony Triffet also scored a touchdown for Lyons.
