NOTABLE

Mead’s softball team knocked off Weld Central in a 3A district play-in game Tuesday. The Mavericks (8-12) will now face No. 1 see Valley on Thursday in the quarterfinals. “It’s huge,” head coach Katie Saenz said. “Having this game is a benefit to us because it is a win going into Thursday’s game instead of having practice. Anybody is beatable, so you never know.” Lyons, meanwhile, is the No. 6 seed and will visit No. 3 Berthoud in another quarterfinals. The winners will play in Saturday’s semifinals at Valley High School.

The Class 4A softball regional brackets were announced on Tuesday. In Region 2, eighth-seeded Erie (12-7) will host at The Ballpark at Erie. The Tigers will face No. 25 Cheyenne Mountain (11-8) in the first round. No. 9 Broomfield (14-5) will host No. 24 Kennedy (14-5) in the other game. Region 3 will be hosted by No. 5 Silver Creek (16-3) at Garden Acres Park in Longmont. The Raptors will square off with No. 28 Woodland Park (14-5). In the other first-round matchup, No. 12 Widefield (13-6) and No. 12 Frederick (12-7) will meet. No. 14 Niwot (11-8) will travel to the Barnes Complex in Loveland for Region 5. The Cougars face No. 19 Montrose (11-8). No. 3 Windsor (15-3-1) and No. 30 Conifer (9-9) face off in the other game. All regions are slated to be played Saturday and the top two teams from each region will move on to the state tournament.

Silver Creek’s soccer team lost captain Cameron Guzman to a season-ending injury last Saturday. Then on Monday, captain Erik Monahan broke his wrist. He played all 80 minutes of the Raptors’ 8-0 win over Mountain View on Tuesday, however.
